We love in a rural area, where everyone knows your name and sometimes more of your business than you would like them to. Since its a close knit communtiy when it came time for our teens to get a part time job to help pay their gas bills and cell phone bills, jobs were easy to find. You talked to someone at a community event and mentioned your teen was job hunting and they knew someone who needed farm help or babysitting, etc. and they were hired. This had its advantages, but also never taught them job hunting skills.
Creating a resume, filling out an application or interviewing for a job were foreign to our children. That being said, I was anxious to let my 16 year old review the book – “Hey, Get a Job!” written by Jennie Withers.
The book is laid out in workbook style. Your read a chapter and stop and then do the “assignments”, reviewing what you just read and hopefully learned. I went over the chapters after my son worked on them and I even learned things I didn’t know. Dress, speech, resumes, applications, interviews and documents are just a few of the topics in the book. It even went over how to fill out official government documents needed for employment. Before my son started reading, Hey Get a Job, he didn’t even know his own Social Security number. “Hey, Get a Job!” helped him learn more about getting a job than any class he has taken at school. It was a down to earth, easy to follow, matter of fact book that let’s you know exactly what to expect, job hunting in the real world.
This book would be an asset to any teen or young adult just entering the job market. Plus, its a great refresher for the adults helping them in their venture. I think this would also be a useful home schooling tool.
