What are cord blood stem cells?
Newborn stem cells can be found in cord blood and the umbilical cord itself, referred to as cord tissue. Umbilical cords are noncontroversial sources of valuable stem cells that are collected after the umbilical cord has been cut and removed, so no harm or pain to baby.
Cord Blood Stem Cells can be harvested and used in treatments for Cancer, Blood disorders, Immune Disorders and Metabolic Disorders. I am sure most of us know someone that has been stricken with one of these illnesses and required treatments.
Did you know that you can harvest your baby’s umbilical cord stem cells? Companies provide umbilical cord banking that can be stored for use by your family or donated to the public for potential use of a recipient needing a stem cell transplant.
No harm is done to mother or child to harvest the stem cells. The blood cells are removed with a syringe, much like a normal blood donation collection. Or the cord can be elevated and blood drains out. All of this is done after the cord has been removed from baby. If you don’t harvest the cells or donate, they are just discarded as medical waste.
Family banking costs can range from $900 to $2300 depending on the terms and there is an annual storage fee accessed, too. Public donation is FREE.
You can visit American Pregnancy online to learn more about Cord Blood Stem Cell banking and donating. Be sure to look around, you may be able to make a difference with a donation some day.
