Redecorating a room or even a whole house needn’t cost a lot. With a bit of imagination it’s perfectly possible to transform where you live without it costing the Earth. From learning basic carpentry skills to picking out table lamps, there are plenty of ways to enhance your home.

Mother Nature’s Touch

Speaking of earth, why not use the natural environment to spruce up your living environment? Shells or stones can be used as mosaics, logs or off-cuts of wood can be fashioned into shelves, tables and chairs. To make things extra fun, enroll in a ceramics class and make bowls or cups for you and your friends

Reupholster, Recycle & Reuse

Bring furniture or furnishing back to life by polishing, painting or reupholstering. Reuse and recycle, whilst learning a valuable new skill too! Covering a chair or sofa, varnishing a table or painting a chest of drawers means that you are creating something that is both reflective of and unique to you. Get creative in other ways too by painting canvases, making candles or accessorizing with throws and rugs.

Paints and wallpaper can vary in price so shop around before you buy. Hardware stores may have end of season lines that they will sell you at reduced cost, or your friends may have unwanted wallpaper or paint for you to make use of.

If you have a large wall space that needs to be covered, use rugs, tapestries, scarves or blankets to decorate the space. Better still, use picture ledges or hooks to display hats or handbags, thus combining aesthetics with storage.

Accessorize

Scour second hand shops, auction houses and websites for low or no cost goods. Table lamps, beds, ornaments, everything can be bought at a fraction of the price of brand new goods, providing you know where to look.

Throw a Party

Finally, instead of employing decorators or handy people, ask if your family and friends can help you decorate instead. Have a decorating party by laying on some music, drink and food while your friends bring tools or paintbrushes. Any excuse to have a get together!
