I am on a serious clean out and purge this month. Simplifying and downsizing have been weighing heavy on me for many months, so I am going full speed ahead. I am determined to get my space back, live on less and have less stuff just sitting around. Our youngest son graduates high school in a few weeks and will be off to college, so no better time than the present.
It seems we have accumulated years worth of stuff from basement to attic that we haven’t used in years. A few years ago, I was inspired by the TV show, Clean Sweep to use the keep, sell or donate method of decluttering. I keep threatening to really clean out like they did on the show, by moving the belongings from each room outside to the yard or driveway and decide what to do with it before it comes back in the house. I haven’t had the nerve to go that far, but I bet it would be a lot easier. I wonder if that show still airs? Maybe I should watch a few episodes to get some inspiration.
In the process of decluttering I am hoping to make a little bit of extra money by selling the stuff we don’t need. Starting with the kids rooms first, because they need spending money for the summer on top of the money they will make from their part time jobs. They have accumulated so many books, DVDs, CDs and Video Games they don’t even remember what they have. My son in high school and my daughter in college both listen to music on their cell phones, so no need for CDs. They read books and play games on their phones, too, so those can go also. My son actually found an app he downloaded to his phone called Music Magpie. You can use the phones camera as a barcode scanner to make money selling the stuff you want to get rid of super easy. Decluttering = cash, my kind of downsizing!
Stay tuned for updates on how much money we make and where we plan to sell the rest of the “stuff” we purge. Have you ever sold things you didn’t need anymore? I would love to hear about your successes and your failures too!
