I am really trying to avoid the grocery store, as much as possible. Everytime I go, I just get depressed seeing the prices of EVERYTHING going up.
I have seen alot of blogs with posts about going “storeless”. Using up the stock you have in your pantry and freezer, before you shop, can definitely be a money saver.
My personal Thrifty Tuesday Tip(s) for this week are all about meat. If you eat meat in your family, I am sure you know its a big part of the grocery bill. There really isn’t alot of coupons out there for meat on a regular basis, at least not in my area.
When preparing casseroles or sauces that contain meat, I always scale back on the amount I use. For example if a recipe calls for 1 lb of ground beef or chicken, I will use 3/4 lb. This works great in soups, stews and sauces, too. Not only will you be saving money, but eating less meat can help your family enjoy a healthier lifestyle, too.
When I buy ground beef, its usually the 80/20 blend. It definitely has more fat, but I always drain the meat in a colander & rinse with hot water to remove as much fat as possible. The drained meat is what I use in spaghetti sauce, bbq or casseroles. As, long as I mix the meat in with other ingredients, I don’t notice any loss of flavor from draining it.
Buying cheaper cuts of meat, can also be a savings, if you cook them in the slow cooker. The longer they cook on the lower tempatures, the more tender the meat will become.
Casseroles, soups and stews are a staple in our home. We do eat meat, potato and veggie meals too, but not on a daily basis. Meatless meals are also enjoyed at least one time a week.
The last meat related tip I can think of is, if you have the storage space, when you find a bargain stock up.
My local store, puts markdown coupons on their meat, a day before the sell by date. I pass the store on my way home, so I can stop when I have time and see if there are any great deals. Last month, I was able to get sirloin tip steaks for $2.20 a lb and chicken thighs/legs for 40 cents a pound. I also got a whole rotesserie chicken. It was marked down from $8 to $5 and then it had another $2 discount coupon on it. Tonight, I got it out of the freezer and was able to make 2 casseroles from the whole chicken, definitely worth the $3 I paid for it, don’t know if I would have paid $5 for it and seriously, I would have never paid full price for it, definitely not worth it.
Do you have any meat related thrifty tips? Would love to have you comment below. Thanks!

Yes! I have a wonderful store I stop at about 1 or 2 times a month. I can get an entire months worth of meat there for around $75. It's a butcher shop inside of a 'general store' at The Andersons. I absolutely love it. I can get the great cuts of meat that I like, and spend a whole lot less. If you have something like this available to you I would use it. I can get things like a 6oz Filet Mignon for less then 3 dollars! 6oz Kansas City Steaks for less the 2 dollars! It's fantastic!

Definitely agree with stocking up on rock bottom prices for meat! I did this with a great deal on meat at Sweetbay and chicken at Target. Great tips!

I have a Bullet Express that I got a year or so ago and I use it as a meat grinder! I am able to take reduced meats and grind them up to use in soups, casseroles, beef patties, etc! There are times I can find steaks cheaper than ground beef but they are the tougher cuts of meat but grinding them up you can never tell the difference! I love my machine and I highly suggest to everyone that does not have a meat grinder to get one. I also buy the bigger roasts when they go on sale and have my meat man either grind them or cut them into cuts I like/want! You can take a cheap pork roast and have it sliced into pork chops. This is much cheaper than buying pork chops. I save on average over $1.50 (or more) per pound by doing this. All you have to do is ask. I never realized my meat man at my local grocery store would do this but they do!

I'm a new follower! I'm a HUGE fan of buying in bulk when it goes on sale. Some day, I will have a huge freezer so I can do so even more!
We also bulk up most recipes with added veggies.
