You can make your own playdough right on the kitchen stove. Most ingredients should be readily available in your pantry and the best part is you can customize it anyway you like.
-
?1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 Tablespoons Oil
- 2 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
- 1 cup water
- food coloring
- cinnamon, vanilla, scented oils or flavorings, if you desire scented playdough.
Mix, dry ingredients in large bowl. Heat oil in heavy saucepan until hot, but not boiling. Remove from heat.
Stir in dry ingredient mix. Stir in any food coloring or scents you desire. Mix well. Return to heat and cook over low heat, stirring with wooden spoon or rubber spatula. Mixture will form ball and become firm after 4 – 5 mins. Remove from heat and place on wax paper to cool.
Store in sealed container. This recipe is the best I have found. The playdough is the perfect consistency and lasts a long time. You will have to supervise the activity, to make sure the kiddos aren’t going to eat the playdough if its scented or colored they may think its food!
- Garlic presses are a great playdough tool. Kids will love the “strands” that are created from the press and it will give their fine motor skills a great workout.
- Cookie cutters of any shape or size work wonders in playdough.
- Have available some pieces of paper with letter shapes, lines and numbers and have your child try to replicate the design with their playdough,
- Safety scissors work great to cut playdough “snakes”. Another great fine motor workout.
-
Cylinder shaped wooden blocks make a great “kid size” rolling pin for your playdough.
I would love to hear your “playdough” ideas in the comments!

This is very similar to my recipe – only instead of the spices/food coloring, I use kool-aid. I also omit the tartar and it doesn't haven't any effect! 🙂
